Mayra Flores was born and raised in Burgos, Tamaulipas, Mexico, where she was instilled with strong family values by her parents and grandparents, who emphasized the importance of putting God and family first. At the age of six, she made the life-changing journey to the United States with her father, who gifted her family the opportunity to become proud, naturalized American citizens.
Growing up as the daughter of migrant workers, Mayra experienced a nomadic childhood, moving frequently to follow the harvests. She spent most of her formative years in the Rio Grande Valley and graduated from high school in San Benito, Texas, in 2004.
From a young age, Mayra worked alongside her parents in the cotton fields, earning extra money for school clothes and supplies. This experience instilled in her a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the value of education. A firm believer in the American Dream, Mayra is committed to ensuring that others have the same opportunities she has enjoyed. She remains eternally grateful to her parents for providing her with the chance to pursue her dreams in this incredible country.
Mayra graduated as a Respiratory Care Practitioner and earned a bachelor's degree in organizational leadership from South Texas College. She dedicated years to caring for children and the elderly with chronic respiratory conditions, demonstrating her commitment to service and compassion.
In June 2022, Mayra made history by becoming the first Mexican-born woman elected to the United States House of Representatives, proudly representing Texas's 34th District. During her tenure, she served on the Homeland Security and Agriculture Committees, advocating for the needs of her constituents.
Following her time in Congress, Mayra took on a role as Senior Advisor with the Texas Public Policy Foundation, where she championed vital issues such as school choice, family empowerment, and economic opportunity across the state of Texas.
As a devoted mother, Mayra is passionate about fighting for a brighter future for the children of South Texas, ensuring that they have the same opportunities to thrive that she did.
